How does this event raise funds?
There are a number of ways!
  • Individuals, families, youth and student groups, and local businesses raise funds by asking their families, friends, and co-workers to sponsor them in Ski for Heat. Participants are sponsored either on a per-mile-skied basis or through a set dollar amount.
  • Skiers (or snowshoers) can register themselves, and their registration fee goes to the Ski for Heat fund.
  • Interested folks who cannot participate themselves but who would still like to contribute may sponsor Martha or someone else they know who will be skiing for heat on a per-mile-skied basis or with a set dollar amount, or they can make a donation directly to Ski for Heat (on-line or mailed to Martha).
  • In addition, we are fortunate to have local businesses as event sponsors.
  • Significantly, the Share Heat Fund of Central Vermont Public Service matches every dollar raised (up to $5000)!! This doubles your contribution!

Where does the money go that is raised?
Money raised helps local families and individuals who need fuel assistance; it is distributed through the Shareheat Fund at BROC.

Where is Ski for Heat held?
The event is held at the Wild Wings Ski Touring Center in Peru, Vermont. Chuck and Tracy Black, the owners of Wild Wings, generously donate the use of their fabulous trail system to Ski for Heat, which means that with your registration/donation, your pass to ski is free!

How do I get to Wild Wings Ski Touring Center?
Peru, Vermont, is less than a half-hour away from Manchester Center and approximately 45 minutes from Rutland, Springfield, or Bennington. For directions, please visit the Wild Wings website page, or call Wild Wings at 802.824.6973, or see the MapQuest link at the bottom of this page.

Is there a fee to ski that day?
No! Wild Wings Ski Touring Center has generously donated the use of its trails that day to all Ski for Heat participants.

Is there a minimum sponsor amount or registration/donation fee required?
No, you are welcome to join us regardless of your giving or fund-raising ability. However, in order to qualify for a free T-shirt, you must contribute at least $35 (the first 40 participants to submit pledges of this amount).

Is this a timed event?
There is no timing; participants ski at their own pace and are welcome to stop and start as often as they like to take in the scenery, look for animals prints in the snow, chat with friends, or warm up by the woodstove.

Is this an all-day event?
Yes and No! Participants will have access to the trails all day (from 9:00 to 4:00), but they are not required to stop or start at a specific time. We want the day to be fun and flexible in reaching its goal! Please show up when you can and ski for as long (or little) as you can. Just sign-in at the warming hut when you arrive and check-out when you leave.

What time should I arrive on Sunday?
You can arrive any time after 8:45 a.m. The trails open at 9:00, so that will give you a chance to register (if you haven't already), gear up, grab a cup of coffee, and head out the door. If that is too early for you, then come when you want! The trails at Wild Wings close at 4:00 p.m.

Can I register on the morning of the event?
Absolutely! Come when you want to! Although the event officially kicks off at 9:00 a.m., you can come any time during the day and hit the trails (which close at 4:00 p.m.) when it is convenient for you. Just check in at the Wild Wings warming hut before you hit the trails. Credit cards are accepted on-site.

Is the event held regardless of the weather?
You bet! The weather in January can be frigid or spring-like, but regardless of the day, Chuck and Tracy Black, the owners of Wild Wings, work hard to make sure the trails are in great condition. If it's cold, there is hot, homemade soup available in the warming hut; and if the temperatures are mild with a bright blue sky, claim a sunny spot and soak up a few rays!

What if the event needs to be cancelled?
We always do our best to make sure Ski for Heat takes place! Wild Wings does a phenomenal job grooming and preparing their trails, and goodness knows we are a hearty, resilient bunch of skiers and 'shoers! However, if for some reason the weather puts the conditions out of our hands and makes skiing not possible, we would need to cancel. Registration fees and donations are non-refundable because they would still go to the Shareheat Fund.

Do I get a free T-shirt if I register?
Yes, the first 40 who raise or donate a minimum of $35 will receive a Ski for Heat T-shirt. In addition, prizes may be awarded in various fund-raising categories, such as most money raised, largest number of pledges, and so forth.

What are the trails like?
There is a wide variety of terrain and trails at Wild Wings, so skiers of all levels and abilities will find something to their suiting. The trails are all one-way and are double-tracked, which spreads out the skiers and makes for peaceful gliding. There is a network of level loops that crosses streams and brooks and passes through meadows, pine groves, and hardwood stands. For those who want to add hills and more varied terrain, there is another network that, again, crosses brooks and takes you through all sorts of ecosystems. And keep an eye out for moose, ermine, pileated woodpeckers, and other wildlife!

What if I want to join in but don't have my own cross-country skis or snowshoes?
Rest assured, you can rent some at Wild Wings for a reasonable price. The kind folks at the ski center will help fit you to boots and skis that are appropriate for you. Call Chuck or Tracy at Wild Wings for rental information.

I am not a cross country skier. Can I still participate?
Absolutely! Wild Wings Ski Touring Center also welcomes snowshoers! Or you can always participate by sponsoring a skier, pledging a donation, or donating a prize.

Who are your participants and where do they come from?
We've had 5-year-olds out raising money alongside of those with a few more decades of experience added to that age! And they come from everywhere, from right next door to a few states away; they range in ability from first-timers to seasoned veterans. In other words, everyone is encouraged to (and does!) join in the fun while helping such a worthwhile cause. The trails at Wild Wings accommodate skiers of all levels, from beginners to experts! Families, individuals, ski teams, and school groups are all welcome.

Can I bring my dog?
Sorry, no dogs please. While we're all big animal lovers, this isn't the place or activity for them. Dogs are not allowed at Wild Wings.

Are there awards?
Yes! Of course, everyone who participates is a winner, as are all those who benefit from the money raised for fuel assistance by the kindness and commitment of all the skiers and pledgers. However, in addition, we will acknowledge exceptional fundraisers. In the past, we have given prizes to the man and woman who raised the most money, had the largest number of pledges, and skied the most miles. Prizes categories will be posted in the warming hut the day of the event.

What if I can’t make it to the event but I already paid a registration fee?
Your registration fee is non-refundable, but remember, it is a tax-deductible donation and will go to a good cause!

I want to support your cause. How can I contribute?
Your donation toward helping our neighbors stay warm this coming winter would be greatly appreciated, regardless of whether or not you participate in Ski for Heat on January 30, 2010. Jump to our question about on-line payments or go to our How You Can Help page to see how you can be part of Ski for Heat.
